Workshops

On October 16th we’ll be diving hands-on into a range of topics and tools, from working with large spatio-temporal datasets to advanced data science techniques. The workshops will be organized in the following streams:

  • Wrangling Big Data
  • Spatial Statistics
  • Modern App Development
  • Spatial Analytics for Change

There will be sessions that are appropriate for all skill levels, from learning to get started with spatial analytics up to those tackling more complex challenges.

4 topics we’re excited to explore at #SDSC24 New York

From advancing education and digital equity to driving sustainable agriculture and climate action, here are some of the topics we’re most excited to explore at the conference.

1. Revolutionizing Global Education, Farming and More with AI and Spatial Analytics

One of the most exciting aspects of SDSC24 is the innovative use of AI to tackle global challenges. Imagine a world where every school, no matter how remote, is connected to the internet, and where farmers can accurately predict crop yields, optimizing their practices for sustainability. AI is making this a reality.

At SDSC24 in New York, Isabelle Tingzon, Data Science Consultant from Unicef will explore the use of AI and spatial analytics to create new opportunities for children across the world.

Kristin Scholten, Data Science Advisor at Nationwide will delve into the intersection of spatial data and machine learning to predict crop yields.

To see more examples of spatial data science and AI, see how Google Cloud uses Earth Engine's analysis capabilities, Vertex AI's machine learning tools, and Google Cloud's scalable infrastructure to monitor land cover changes and detect deforestation.

2. Driving Climate Action with Location Intelligence

Climate change is the defining issue of our time, and investment firms are increasingly turning to AI and geospatial data to guide their climate transition strategies.

At this year’s conference, Anne Rolim, Data Scientist at EQT Partners will highlight how Spatial Data Science tools are used to identify high-potential investments and contribute to climate mitigation.

Stacy Liu, Principal Architect at Tokio Marine Highland will explore the application of GIS and spatial analytics within the flood insurance industry.

Earlier this year, the Bank of England explored how flooding, the largest physical risk from climate change, impacts UK businesses.

3. Modernizing Transportation

Transportation systems are the lifeblood of modern economies, and ensuring their efficiency and resilience is crucial. At SDSC24, we’ll learn about how geospatial data is being leveraged at scale to solve complex transportation challenges.

Matthew Konski and Daniel Lewis at Geotab will discuss how map-matching solutions optimize route planning.

Andrew Flowerday, Supervisor - ADAS Mapping & Localization at Ford, will explain how using geo modernizes the automotive landscape and outline the key principles for a successful geospatial framework in the automotive industry.

In London, BT, discussed how anonymized and aggregated mobility and web/app data provide insights into UK road usage.

4. Exploring Neighborhood Dynamics

The conference will also dive into the fascinating world of neighborhood change and real estate dynamics. By applying natural language processing to real estate data, researchers are uncovering new insights into how communities evolve over time.

This has profound implications for understanding social equity, gentrification, and urban planning, and we’re excited to see how Elizabeth Delmelle at the University of Pennsylvania uncovers insights that can inform future policy and development.

Last year, RIPCO Real Estate presented a comprehensive approach to predicting ground floor retail rent prices using geographically weighted regression and spatial regression.

...All this, and so much more!
